10 Best Ballet Flats 2017
The best ballet flats are often called “barefoot shoes” for a very good reason – you feel like you are going barefoot throughout the day. Made of lightweight materials, and with minimalist styling, these versatile shoes go from the workplace to evening in a snap.
Whether you are wearing a dress, slacks, shorts, or jeans, ballet flats are going to look great with your outfit. They vary in price, but are usually quite affordable based on the materials used
Classic ballet flats will not have very much sole to protect the bottom of the foot. If you prefer a little more arch support or sole, you can buy inserts. You may have to buy ½ size larger shoe, if you are going to use inserts.
Things to Consider When Buying Ballet Flats
The actual dancers’ shoes may not be the best choice for everyday wear, because of the lack of support and protection for the foot. Also, don’t get “flats” mixed up with “slippers”, which have even less support and structure. Flats do have a little bit of sole that goes the length of the bottom of the shoe.
Some designs will have a little bit of a heel, in some cases, up to an inch and a half. For this guide, we’ll be looking at flats that have ½” heel or lower. These are often used on the dance floor as well as for everyday wear.
Most ballet flats will have elastic across the heel and toes to hold them in place. Street versions will often be more constructed, at least at the heel.

You can buy ballet flats in shoe stores, online, and in ballet supply stores. Here are some things to consider when you are shopping for these comfortable, affordable shoes:
- Fit. Make sure that there is enough room in the instep to accommodate any inserts you may use.
- Sole. Flats you plan to use on the dance floor need a slick sole. Some of the flats listed above have too much texture on the bottom for dancing.
- Elastic. Your flats may or may not have elastic across the heel and toe. This is a benefit for dancing, but not so important for dress wear.
- Vendor. Choose a vendor who will let you return the flats if they don’t fit. Most will not accept shoes that show signs of wear on the soles, but otherwise, you should be able to return or exchange them.
- Sort By. Most sellers allow you to browse for your purchase by several different qualifications. You can select by:
- Material. Ballet flats are made of a wide variety of materials, including leather, satin, suede, and canvas. You can even get them made of vegan synthetics.
- Heels. Some flats have a little bit of heel. Choose the heel according to your own height and whether or not you will dance in them.
Top 3 Best Ballet Flats Reviews
The PUMA Women’s Zandy Ballet Flat is about the most comfortable flat you will put on your feet. The footbed has a little bit of cushion to it, and the lining inside keeps the shoe fit snugly to your foot without being too tight. This very affordable shoe combines value and comfort, with plenty of style.
There is just enough grip on the sole to keep my feet from slipping on polished floors at the office. They don’t rub my feet, and they’re so comfortable and soft that I didn’t even have to break them in.
These flats go with everything. The style and finish make a great look with slacks or skirts, and they are very flattering to my feet. This shoe is available in two neutral colors, and I bought both of them because they go with so many different styles. They have a combination matt and shiny finish, so they can look dressy without being too shiny. I did, however, buy a ½ size larger than I usually buy, to make room for inserts.
This is one of the best ballet flats, and if you are only going to buy one pair, this is the brand and style to buy.
These are my next most favorite flats, running a very close second to the PUMA pair. These have more of the classic “ballet flat” look, with elastic on the side. This shoe is available in several widths and about 30 colors!
However, you still can’t use these as dance shoes because of the full rubber sole. It’s just not slick enough for dancing, although in every other feature, they look and feel like ballet flats.
These shoes have elastic running around the entire top, making for a nice fit without being too tight. In addition, the lining inside is natural suede, so it is nice and breathable. This means that my feet don’t sweat in these flats! The leather is lovely and soft My only regret is that they only come in black.
For the price, these are great shoes – comfortable, affordable, and pretty.
The Timberland Women’s Ellsworth Ballet Flat is a dream of subtle detail. Even better, it is available in nine – that’s NINE – different colors!
The upper is either Nubuk or full-grain leather, depending on the color you buy, and the sole is manmade materials. This is not a dancing shoe, but it is stylish, comfortable, and can go “dressy” if you want. If you order Nubuk, go a size larger.
The very slight heel is a nice detail, and the inside lining is comfortable and durable, as is the rest of the shoe. The top edge is padded, as is the heel edge, so the shoe stays on your foot without rubbing. The elastic edge is much more comfortable than a stitched leather edge, and is something I look for in this type of shoe.
As with most of the best ballet flats, this shoe is sized a little small, so order at least a ½ size larger. This is a great choice for dressy occasions or for every day.
